J.J. Thomson shows that the filaments of a light bulb emit electrons: he discovers thermionic emission. By adding an additional electrode, it attracts current through a vacuum or, if negatively charged, repels it. The vacuum tube, invented two decades earlier by Thomas Edison, now finds a scientific explanation and practical applications thanks to the full understanding of its basic mechanism and its subsequent mass production.
