French physician and physiologist Etienne-Jules Marey, using a series of snapshots of a cat falling upside down and righting itself on the fly, discovered the exact mechanism. The cat does not behave like a rigid body, but alternately rotates its front and back halves, extending and retracting its legs to control and maintain its angular momentum.
