Heinrich Kreutz observed a comet skimming the Sun and surviving to reappear on the other side. Today, these comets are called Kreutz sungrazers. An example is C/2011 W3 Lovejoy (I’ve seen it!), which will pass just 140,000 km from the Sun (half the distance between the Earth and the Moon).
