Astronomers find two (not one) comets in the sky in the same orbit as the Great Comet of 1843. On Earth, in recent months, there has been a debate over the hypothesis that a comet breaks apart due to its close passage across the Sun and the enormous amount of material lost into space. And this is happening before astronomers’ eyes. The fragments were then revisited in 1882, and they turned out to be three large pieces of the original comet. This category of comets was called Kreutz’s Grazing Comets. Other significant fragments will be found in the future, including C/2011 W3 Lovejoy (I’ve seen it!). The original comet from which all the pieces we see today appear to have originated appears to be the Great Comet of 1106.
