The first Workers’ International, founded on the initiative of philosopher Karl Marx, is dissolved. After six congresses in nine years, it had fallen into disrepute due to internal dissension, led by the anarchist Mikhail Bakunin, but also externally, for its support of the futile but ferocious Paris uprising of 1870.
