Brothers Lord Kelvin and James Thomson began building machines capable of solving differential equations analogically. Their goals were problems such as calculating tides and ballistic firing angles. They eventually developed a machine that could calculate the annual tide table in four hours. However, they never succeeded in extending their work to other problems or making it more general.
