Philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce publishes two articles in the Journal of Speculative Philosophy, entitled “Questions Concerning Certain Claims of the Human Faculties,” which lay out his theory of consciousness: we are not endowed with introspection, nor can we operate in the absence of signs. Above all, we lack intuitive faculties; that is, every notion is actually dictated by a previous one.
