Charles Darwin published The Fertilization of Orchids by Insects, in which he discovered coevolution. Observing the Star of Madagascar (Angraecum sesquipedale), an orchid with a spur up to 30 cm long, he predicted the existence of a previously unknown moth with an equally long proboscis for sucking nectar. In 1903, Xanthopan morganii praedicta was discovered on the island.
