The Democratic Party still manages to win the US presidency with Buchanan, but the Republicans win 11 of the 15 Northern states and almost all of the highly populous states of New York and Ohio, while Democrats narrowly win Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Indiana. The Democratic Party is now the only political force with a national reach.
