With Matthew Perry’s expedition, the Americans broke Japan’s centuries-old commercial and cultural isolation. With this contact with Western culture, the Japanese drew the opposite conclusions from the Chinese, who instead withdrew into Western culture. Japan would become the first non-Western society to experience the transformation of the Industrial Revolution.
