Scotsman James Harrison, who emigrated to Australia in 1837, built a refrigerator based on the vapor compression of ether for an Australian brewery. Harrison and American Alexander Twining, who had simultaneously done much the same thing but with vapor compression, are considered the inventors of commercial refrigeration.
