Annexation of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California to the United States by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, at the end of the Mexican-American War. The war had been promoted by Democratic President Polk and opposed by conservatives (Whigs). It was fought by thousands of volunteers from various states.
