Giovanni Mastai Ferretti was appointed Pope, taking the name Pius IX. His first decisions embodied a social and political shift compared to previous popes and the Restoration. For the next two years, until 1848, every religious holiday throughout the Italian peninsula became an occasion for protests against the sovereigns and a drive for renewal.
