Tocqueville wrote: “The most fearsome of all the evils that threaten the future of the United States arises from the presence of blacks in their land (…) Christianity had destroyed slavery, the Christians of the sixteenth century re-established it, but as an exception and limited to a single human race. In this way they inflicted on humanity a wound that was less extensive, but infinitely more difficult to heal.”
