In Italy, Mazzini founded Young Italy, a cadre party composed primarily of young professionals, students, and intellectuals. It spread to Milan, Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy, Tuscany, Romagna, and Nice, reaching 60,000 members. However, it remained almost absent in Southern Italy, where the Carbonari movement prevailed.
