The French philosopher and critic Auguste Comte wrote in Cours de Philosophie that we will never know how stars function and what they are, due to their enormous distance. Ironically, at around the same time, the German physicist Joseph von Fraunhofer was doing precisely what Comte thought was impossible (he probably hadn’t read his book). Fraunhofer was observing the spectral lines of stars.
