Astronomer J. Huth, Olbers’s rival (who has discovered several new asteroids in recent years), claims that the bodies in the Main Asteroid Belt are remnants of planetary formation that never ended up inside a true planet, due to the gravitational disturbances of the mighty nearby Jupiter. Another version sees the asteroids as the leftovers from the formation of a planet that did form: tiny Mars (small compared to Earth and Venus).
