In commercial or military vessels, approximately one sailor is needed for every five tons of displacement. In the 14th century, it was one for every 10 tons in Venetian cogs, while in the 13th century, it was one for every 5 tons in lateen-rigged ships. In the 17th century, sailors began to increase again, mostly for defense against pirates.
