After the experiments with emeralds and gems by Vauquelin and Smithson Tennant it became clear that diamonds are made of carbon only, while the colors and types of gems are distinguished only by the impurities present in them: there is no precise definition of what makes an emerald or a ruby an emerald or a ruby.
