Antoine-Laurent Lavoiser is arrested as a tax collector. Faithful to his studies, he asks to complete his final work. The judge’s response is famous: “The republic has no need of scientists!” The father of modern chemistry is guillotined, and his body ends up in a mass grave. He is said to have asked the executioner to count the number of words his head would be able to utter after decapitation.
