French diplomat manages to smuggle Eugenia caryophyllata seedlings, the plant from which the precious clove is obtained, from the Moluccas and bring them to the French colony of Mauritius. From there, the plant will spread throughout the East African coast, especially to Zanzibar, where cloves will become the main export. This ends the Dutch monopoly on this spice, which had begun a century earlier.
