Jean-Baptiste d’Alambert and Leonhard Euler calculate the motion of the ellipsoidal Earth exactly and derive from it not only the precession of the equinoxes of 25,800 years, as Newton had already done (but already discovered by Hipparchus), but also the nutation of 18 years (discovered by James Bradley in 1728).
