Irish philosopher George Berkeley sailed for Newport, Rhode Island. He intended to found an academy there, but the funds never arrived, and in 1731 he returned to England. The Americans, however, did not forget his concern for the education of their ancestors, and named a university town in California and a college at Yale after him.
