Jacob Bernoulli, observing a comet, decided to dedicate his life to mathematics rather than the Church. It was the beginning of a dynasty of mathematicians that would last 150 years and produce eight renowned mathematicians, three of whom are among the most famous of all time (Jacob, his brother Johann, and his son Daniel).
