The Jesuit Giovanni Battista Riccioli published the Almagestum Novum in which he described the lunar topology and distinguished between mountains and plains, introducing many place names still in use today, such as Mare Tranquilitatis, where three centuries later the Apollo 11 mission would arrive, carrying the descendants of an English colony from a part of the world recently discovered in the Jesuit’s time: America.
