Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. The Dutch Neuw Haarlem ran aground near the cape, forcing its occupants to remain there for about a year. This was the first Dutch settlement in South Africa. Unlike Portuguese or English settlements, the Dutch ones were, at least initially, commercial rather than military in nature.
