Fermat wrote to the French monk Marin Mersenne that he had discovered that prime numbers, such as 5, 13, 17, and 29, which, when divided by 4, yield a remainder of 1, can always be written as the sum of two squares. This fact is true… and obviously Fermat forgot to write down the complete proof!
