Galileo Galilei published “On the Discoveries of Dice,” a short essay on gambling, funded by the Grand Duke of Tuscany. He wondered why, when we roll three dice, the number 10 comes up more often than the number 9. (The difference is only 8%, so the Grand Duke must have been an avid gambler to have noticed it with certainty.)
