The Dutch leaving Holland for Asia aboard the ships of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) initially numbered 8,500 per year, rising to as many as 40,000 annually by the middle of the century. In total, more than a million people, mostly young men, left Holland during the 17th and 18th centuries.
