The French were the first to settle in Guanabara Bay, or the Bay of Rio de Janeiro; the French governor, the puritan Nicolas de Villeganon, decided to settle on a small island which he named Antarctic France; they exploited the timber of the surrounding forests but were ill-equipped and demoralized.
