Hugh Willoughby and Richard Chancellor set sail from Deptford to search for a Northeast Passage to India. Willoughby froze to death during the voyage, but Chancellor reached Archangel and then continued overland to Moscow, to the court of Ivan the Terrible. There he founded the Moscow Company (full name: The Mystery and Company of Merchants Adventures for the Discovery of Regions, Dominions, Islands, and Places Unknown).
