Thebes, near Luxor, Egypt. Egyptian scholars compile the Rhind Papyrus, now held at the British Museum, which contains a series of mathematical calculations: 84 different mathematical problems commonly used by Egyptian public officials. It is written not in hieroglyphics but in a quicker, simpler script. It has a prominent title in bold, red letters, which reads: “The correct method of understanding the meaning of things and knowing everything—the obscurities and all secrets.” It is the most extensive mathematical text of ancient times.
