Venice carefully avoided engaging the Ottoman Empire directly in battle, but when the opportunity arose, it purchased seaports throughout the Aegean Sea and elsewhere at favorable prices. Thus, it purchased Durazzo and Scutari in Albania, Lepanto, Patras, Argos, and Nafplio in the Morea, and finally Athens itself, as well as other territories around Negroponte and other Aegean islands.
