Girolamo Savonarola was excommunicated by Pope Alexander VI, and the following year he was hanged and burned at the stake as a “heretic, schismatic, and for preaching new things.” His works were placed on the Index of Prohibited Books in 1559. Savonarola’s writings were rehabilitated by the Church in the following centuries, to the point of being included in important theological treatises.
