Christopher Columbus asked the Spanish court for three ships to allow him to reach the Indies by sailing directly west. As he had done three years earlier with the Portuguese king, he was denied. He succeeded only after years of persuasion, and everything suggests that the Spanish monarchs had little faith in the success of the operation.
