Da Canal was held responsible for the Venetian defeat against the Turks at Negroponte by failing to attack in time and instead dropping anchor. Upon his return to his homeland, he was imprisoned and succeeded by Pietro Mocenigo, who carried out raids throughout the Aegean, capturing vast booty and even allowing Venice to conquer Cyprus without a fight. After four years, Pietro Mocenigo returned to Venice and was welcomed as a hero, and rewarded in 1474 with his election as Doge.
