13th century

Until the 13th century, Christian cartography was inspired by theological concepts: the navel, or center, was Jerusalem, the East (placed at the top) culminated with the Takt-i-Sulayman mountain in Azerbaijan, where the earthly paradise is located and from which flow four paradisiacal rivers: the Tigris, the Euphrates, the Piso (probably the Ganges), and the Gehon (the Nile). It was believed to be closed, it was the receptacle of dreams.
