At the head of his hordes of nomads, Tamerlane, between 1382 and 1405, the year of his death, put together an empire that stretched from Europe to India. He rebuilt Samarkand and made it his capital. His successors were his son and then his grandson, Ulug-Beg, who was overthrown by Muslim fanatics who beheaded him.
