First phase of the Little Ice Age. The second phase, from the 16th century onward, one study argues was caused, at least in part, by European expansion into the Americas. With the extermination of perhaps 90% of the indigenous population, forests re-occurred in regions where agriculture had been practiced for centuries. The absorption of carbon by vegetation caused this phase of relative global cooling.
