Firearms had not yet reached the European kingdoms, but the English Earls of Derby and Salisbury happened to be present in Spain at the Battle of Tarifa, where the Arabs used cannons against the Spanish. Impressed by what they saw, upon their return home they had cannons introduced into their armies, which were then immediately used against the French at the Battle of Crécy just six years later.
