Inferno, Divine Comedy. When Dante Alighieri describes Hell in the Divine Comedy, he draws inspiration from his visit to the Venice Arsenal, then the largest industrial facility in Europe and probably the world. It was, in fact, the most grandiose spectacle of intense industrial activity that Dante had ever seen or could have witnessed at the time.
