Genoese admiral Lamba Doria devastates the Venetian Dalmatian coast and forces the Venetians to take up the challenge. They move their fleet and encounter the Genoese off the island of Korčula: 90 Venetian vessels against 80 Genoese, including fully armed galleys. The battle is fierce, with heavy losses on both sides. The Genoese ultimately manage to demonstrate their superior seamanship by capturing most of the enemy’s ships, but they fail to capitalize on their victory: industrious Venice manages to arm a new fleet and the following year launches an incursion into Genoa itself!
