The Genoese continued their extraordinary economic and naval expansion. In the western Mediterranean, they definitively crushed Pisa, which would never recover from the naval defeat of Meloria in 1284, and thus achieved undisputed dominance of the Tyrrhenian Sea, both navally and in trade. Beyond Gibraltar, the Genoese traded with Bruges and England, bringing back wool and linen. In the East, they were particularly present and influential in the Black Sea and Asia Minor: Pera in the port of Constantinople, Caffa, the Crimea and the rivers of Russia, the island of Chios, Smyrna, and Phocaea.
