Mongolia. The Flemish Friar Minor William of Rubruk visits the Mongolian capital of Qaraqorum, but is unimpressed: he claims to have seen the Khan’s tent set up outside the walls, and compares the city to the village of Saint-Denis outside Paris, which he considers much more beautiful.
