John of Salisbury writes in his Metalogicon: “Bernard of Chartres said that we are dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants because we can see more and further than they: therefore not because of the sharpness of our sight or the stature of our body, but because we are carried up and lifted up by the greatness of the giants.”
