Cyprus. First evidence of the use of opium, derived from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). It was later used by the Greeks, Phoenicians, Minoans, Egyptians, and Babylonians. In 330 BC, Alexander the Great brought it to Asia: to Persia and India, from where it reached China around the 7th century AD.
