5:30 a.m. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Union soldiers, supported by armed civilians, open fire on the Army of Northern Virginia. After a day of fighting, outnumbered, the Federals are forced to abandon the town of Gettysburg and retreat to the slight hills (almost a ripple of land) just south of it: between Cemetery Hill and Devil’s Den.
