China breaks record for “Action at a Distance via Entanglement,” taking a step toward a Quantum Internet. Results from the Micius satellite test quantum entanglement, paving the way for hack-proof global communications. A team of Chinese scientists using an experimental satellite tested quantum entanglement over unprecedented distances, transmitting pairs of entangled photons to three ground stations across China, each separated by over 1,200 kilometers. The test validates a long-standing principle of quantum theory and firmly establishes China as a leader in a burgeoning “quantum space race” to create a secure, quantum-based global communications network—a “quantum race” for a potentially unhackable “quantum internet,” which would be of immense geopolitical importance. The results were published in 2017 in the scientific journal “Science.”
