The Cassini probe crossed Saturn’s ring plane for the first time, from the inner side. It passed unscathed and sent back previously unseen photos. It was struck by a handful of tiny micrometeorites, contrary to initial fears that had caused the main antenna to move in the direction of the motion to act as a shield. It was then intentionally crashed into Saturn in September of the same year.
