Tianjin Port. Northern China. Two massive explosions, separated by about 30 seconds, rock the city. More than 100 people died and hundreds were injured. The scene was devastated across a vast area, with hundreds of crumpled containers lying everywhere. Some have suggested that firefighters’ water used to put out the first fire reacted with calcium carbonate stored in the port to create highly explosive acetylene, which then ignited the ammonium nitrate, also present. The first explosion was 3 tons of TNT, and the second 21 tons of TNT (0.021 kton). It was clearly recorded in visible light by a Japanese geostationary satellite. 4,000 Hyundai cars and 1,500 Renault cars were incinerated.
